Faith Is Not always Easy!

God blesses those who patiently endure testing and temptation. Afterward they will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him. (James 1:12 NLT)

Let God Handle Your Burdens

For 42 years I had the privilege of serving as a pastor. The first 17 years I served as a preaching pastor. I went back to seminary and earned my MRE (Masters in Religious Education) degree and served the remaining 25 years of my ministry as a minister of education. During those 42 years I did a lot of funerals and ministered to lots of people going through trying and tragic situations. Often I heard well meaning people make statements that made me cringe. I heard one statement so often that I really grew to dislike it. In very difficult times, I often heard people comment, ďGod will never give you more than you can handleĒ. But I have learned thatís not true! This might sound harsh to you, but He will, for our own benefit. It happened to me! There were those who said that to me during my difficult days of cancer treatment. Itís a sweet sentiment, really, and people who say it are speaking from caring and concerned hearts. .Actually, when I realized the simple fact that God can and will allow us to experience more than we can possibly bear, it got easier for me! I know for a fact youíve had your own fair share too, because thatís the reality of life. If you disagree, itís because you havenít been there yet, but your day will come! If you donít face these difficult situations properly, they can steal your joy.

I knew the phrase ďGod will never give you more than you can handleĒ was not in the Bible. In 1 Corinthians 10:13, Paul speaks of Him giving us an escape from temptations so that itís not too much to bear. But when it comes to pain, trials, heartache, and burdens, not once does it say it wonít be more than we can bear. Instead, Jesus says, ďCome to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.Ē (Matthew 11:28-30 NIV)

Donít those words strike your heart? Christ is speaking to those of us who are carrying burdens much too heavy for our own shoulders. And in that one verse He simply states the reason why we are given more than we can handle: Itís so we can come to Him. Itís so we can trust Him enough to hand over our heavy, crippling burdens and let Him carry the load. This made all the difference for me when I really learned this truth

You might be weary and burdened right now. You might be filled with sadness or drowning in debt. You might be under the pressures of raising children or maybe the inability to have them. You might be dealing with a terminal disease and you still have young children. And chances are you might need Jesus to find you on the path and take up that heavy cross youíre dragging. Besides, even He tells us that Heís more equipped to carry it, so why not hand it over? Just remember, Jesus gives us hope. I like what the Psalmist said, ďBut I will keep on hoping for your help; I will praise you more and moreĒ. (Psalm 71:14 NLT)   Be Blessed Today!
